Friday night at ROCO rocked and now on to the park SATURDAY AUG 14

Hey there fellow sketchers,

We had a fabulous time on Friday Aug 6th at ROCO. I'm planning on scanning or somehow finding a way to post a picture or two but maybe anyone who took some can email me or Genine...

Anyway, in the meantime, we are SKETCHCRAWLING again! Saturday August 14th is an International Sketchcrawl date (I think #30 but I could be wrong) we will meet at the Canoe Launch/Boat house part of Genessee Valley Park at 10 am. The park is a really neat, complex mix of riverside park-i-ness and should provide ample spots to draw. There's a map of the park here (http://www.monroecounty.gov/Image/GeneseeValleyPark(1).pdf ) and we'll have some spare materials for the absolute newbies...but plan on bringing a sketchbook and a friend (oh and sunscreen, waterbottle, etc.).

We'll meet rain or shine and then plot a rain location if indeed it is super wet...

See ya then!

Friday August 6th

Please join us Friday August 6th at ROCO for:

State of the City-Opening Reception:Aug 6,2010 6-10pm

Public Participatory Drawing/ Sketch Crawl: Aug 6, 4 - 10pm Contribute to the exhibition and share your vision

State of the City is a group exhibition featuring Trevor Flynn, Amy Casey and Spectres of Liberty. State of the City 2010 engages artists, creative professionals and the public in considering the history and envisioning the future of upstate cities.

Trevor FlynnBritish artist / educator Trevor Flynn is known as a proponent and instigator of drawing and idea generation within the creative industries and education. His ideas have been honed through participation in London's Big Draw, his own Sketchmob UK, and his teaching through Drawing at Work. Flynn will give a public lecture (June 17th at Memorial Art Gallery) and lead several workshops. Community drawings and sketch models resulting from these workshops will be exhibited as part of State of the City. 20 Fresh Perceptions: Uncommon Sense and the Visual Imagination traces the process of successful designers, engineers, architects and artists, in a creative cycle of imaginative observation, transformation, and application of new ideas. The talk richly illustrates creative processes used to visualize forms that do not already exist.

Public Participatory Drawing/ Sketch Crawl
Friday August 6, 2010 main location/ meet-up location RoCo, 4pm - 10pm. Bring your own sketchbook if you have one, something to draw with, or use provided materials. Contribute to the State of the City Exhibition and participate in drawing as a way to think about community, architecture and urban issues. As part of the crawl, go to Visual Studies Workshop (31 Prince St.) where artist Karen Brummund will be installing a drawing to scale on the façade of their historic building. Unique sketch paper will be provided to sketchcrawlers on-site as part of the exhibition at VSW. Participants will be encouraged (but not required) to add their drawings to the State of the City Exhibition. You do not have to be an experienced artist to contribute.

Amy Casey
Casey's paintings "document [her] love of both the urban landscape, and small twisted creatures." Casey's small detailed paintings present fantastical and impossible urban landscapes. These intriguing and scary rust belt zones residential and industrial structures take on personality, muster their collective humanity and seem to be fighting for their own life. From what? Though optimism and playfulness can be found, it all seems to be teetering on the brink. It is no surprise that Casey's work is "inspired by natural and unnatural disasters, personal fiascoes and the never ending stream of bad news coming in from the media..."

Spectres of LibertySpectres of Liberty is an on-going public, hybrid media project by Dara Greenwald, Josh MacPhee, and Olivia Robinson in collaboration with Art School in the Art School (Joanna Spitzner). Their practice combines expanded cinema, relational aesthetics, situated and community practices, as well as media such as digital animation, video, inflatable sculpture, web, text, and print. Spectres of Liberty considers the history of the movement to abolish slavery in the United States and the presence of this history in Upstate NY today. Spectres of Liberty will present sculpture and documentation from their recent works in Troy, NY and Syracuse, NY.

We hope to see you there!!!
