"20 Fresh Perceptions: uncommon Sense and the Visual Imagination." British artist trevor Flynn leads a lively discussion based on his work and study of innovators as they generate and develop ideas. Flynn is a major instigator of drawing and idea generation within the creative industries and education. His ideas have been honed through participation in england’s Big Draw, his own Sketchmob uK, and courses his company (Drawing at Work http://www.drawingatwork.co.uk/ ) develops for architects and engineers. Flynn’s talk traces the process of successful designers, engineers, architects and artists, in a creative cycle of imaginative observation, transformation, and application of new ideas in artifacts and products. the talk richly illustrates creative processes used to visualize forms that do not already exist.

"Drawing with trevor Flynn: Provoking New Ideas." In conjunction with the creative Workshop, trevor Flynn will offer two three-hour drawing classes at the Memorial Art Gallery. classes are limited to 15 students and will include instruction in using drawing to explore and innovate— regardless of starting skill. these one-time classes offer a unique way to begin or continue drawing in a meaningful, personal way with guidance from a truly unique perspective. Students can expect to draw new things in a new way.

March 27th Crawl

This past Saturday we had a sketchchcrawl. It started inside the library but with the sun shining we took to the streets. Walked over to St. Mary's and Washington Square park. Which has a statue of Lincoln...huh....who knew?!? There were 5 sketchers and one photograhper. Not a bad turn out for March. Hoping to have some of the other sketchers sketches posted soon.

Woo hoo, another sketching group in Rochester!!

So there's a great group out there called "The Roving Sketchers". The idea behind that group is much the same as sketchcrawl. People gather to draw together. The difference is that the each "meet-up" is at a single location. They usually last around 2-3 hours but can go on as long as you can.

March 27th Rundel library

Photographer Will Yurman does a great feature for the Democrat & Chronicle where he makes a panorama photo of a Rochester landmark. Turns out he has one for the Rundel Library.

Rochester has a gorgeous old library downtown (right across the street from it's more modern expansion) and it strikes us as a great place to begin a sketchcrawl. So on Saturday March 27 at 2pm we'll meet at the entrance of the Rundel Library, sketchbooks & pencils in hand, library cards in pockets and the joy of new stuff to draw. Usually, also, old libraries have hushed silences, people, mysteries and fantastic structures...

Also, turns out you can check out art when you're at the library. Who knew?

Sketch-what? Sketch-where?

Welcome!


We are excited. For the past two years, we have gathered a small group of like-minded creative troublemakers together a couple of times a year to take part in Sketchcrawls (more on that in a minute) here in Rochester, NY. Each time, we found that the scribbles in our sketchbooks are better on those days of collective drawing. We discovered friendships and amazing corners of this city and we spent relatively little money doing all of that.


So, what's a Sketchcrawl?

Let me begin by explaining that the name and project is essentially borrowed. Enrico Casarosa, an artist & illustrator in San Francisco came up with the concept and has been firing people up about the idea and bringing it international. We too gather groups of people for intensive and fun drawing mini-marathons (about 3 to 6 hours is normal). We simply tell folks where we will start and where we might go next and then show up armed with our sketchbooks and materials (here's what Enrico brings) and begin.


So, what are we doing and why?

We plan to gather a little more in 2010, and maybe a little little more in 2011. Genine says she wants to get all of Rochester drawing, I say that sounds a bit too much like my day-job. We really have loved meeting everyone that came to a sketchcrawl (from Christian who lives closer to DC but showed up at the Lamberton Conservatory on January 2 of this year) to Karen who came all the way from Sweden to draw with us. OK she came for other reasons but happily wandered around the city laughing and drawing with us.

We'll soon post the dates for sketchcrawls this year and the starting locations. As well as pictures from our sketchbooks and any and all thoughts, ideas and whatnots that might inspire you to draw as well.
